For the second innovation theme of 2018, the John Lewis Partnership is seeking innovative solutions to help eliminate plastic waste.

We want to identify innovative concepts which could significantly reduce the impact of plastic use in both John Lewis and Waitrose, and helps us make a significant contribution towards the UK Plastics Pact targets:

• 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable
• 70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled or composted
• 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging
• Take actions to eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging items through redesign, innovation or alternative delivery methods

Eliminate Plastic Waste

Solutions to eliminate plastic waste

As large retailers, John Lewis and Waitrose buy, move and sell thousands of products every day. Across our value chain we currently depend on plastics to make products, to increase shelf life and protect products as they are moved from source to customer. However, in our aim to contribute to a more sustainable future for retail, we need to operate with greater efficiency – doing more with fewer natural resources.

We are always looking at ways to eliminate or use alternatives to plastics where the environmental benefit is clear. This includes using recycled plastic and by-products / waste material in our products, packaging and operations, and encouraging customers to dispose of products and packaging sustainably.

This challenge is open to any business which has a proposition that aligns with the above objectives and also meets the following criteria:

You are a business that can help John Lewis and Waitrose eliminate plastic waste in innovative ways

You have deep knowledge and expertise of the challenges around plastic sustainability

• A willingness to openly share information and work collaboratively together on a new proposition to help create a more sustainable retail environment

And last but not least, an appreciation of the John Lewis Partnership company values and John Lewis and Waitrose brands

“The John Lewis Partnership exists today because of the extraordinary vision and ideals of our founder, John Spedan Lewis. He believed in experimentation and openly encouraged it. Today this ethos lives on and it’s up to each and every one of our Partners to ensure an environment for this to happen is created. JLAB is one of many great examples of us doing just that and in 2018 it’s never been more important for the Partnership to nurture innovation both inside and outside our business. We want to build entrepreneurs of the future.”

OUTCOMES ANNOUNCED

“Accessing the expertise of John Lewis and Waitrose Partners through JLAB was a real privilege for WeFiFo and securing their backing is certainly the most significant milestone in our journey so far. We were inspired by the people we worked with and were very fortunate to discover so much shared purpose and passion. We used our time with JLAB to cement strong foundations and we will now build on these as we enlist the help of the Partnership in our search for and celebration of the country’s most talented home cooks.

Seni Glaister, CEO and co-founder of WeFiFo”
“JLAB has given us a peek behind the curtain of two of the country’s biggest retailers and an invaluable insight into how they handle delivery. The opportunity to run two pilots across the Partnership has equipped us with the product know-how we needed to make that final mile of delivery even more straightforward for consumers and retailers. The investment signifies a big step for our business.

Bea Warner, co-founder and CEO of Exaactly”
“Working with John Lewis was a turning point for the business because we got real insight into what retailers are looking for.
